Denimax

I'd wager we have enough denim here to rival any Dukes of Hazzard convention anywhere. On this (hopefully) brief return to chilly weather, you can't top a bit of 12oz Selvedge for keeping those VIPs (Very Important Parts) good 'n' toasty.
Mmmmmmm...

Surf Jumble @ St Merryn

I attended the last Surf Jumble sale at St Merryn village hall. It was a veritable treasure trove of contemporary art, retro nuggets, well-thumbed reads and the inevitable hilltops of pre-worn surfwear. It was magic, and I hereby highly recommend it.

I'm a bit damp today.......

It really rained on me today (really). And the normally pleasant walk to work was further spoilt by the high chance of a M.O.T failure on my van...... I wasn't too happy.

However I am writing this blog entry from the warmth and comfort of a GUL
drysuit and now the day seems just that bit warmer and that bit better.

Now all I need is a GUL catalytic converter for the van
!

Monday Karma

I jest not. This book actually fell off the swap shelf this morning as I wandered past. After a particularly merry weekend, I fear someone is trying to tell me something...
However.
I'm taking issue with the cellulite thing. Energy, immune system, complexion - fair enough. All could do with a good hit of fresh veg from my Mums garden.
But to take a cheap shot at my love-handles is hardly fair, and certainly not on a Monday morning.
This book has now been swapped.

Saturday 27 March 2010

Pick it. Read it. Swap it.

You know how it is... the sun comes out. You head to the beach. You have valiant aspirations of tearing up 3-4ft offshore peelers, but the ruddy forecast was wrong and it's barely big enough to worry the dogs ankles. So you reach into your man-bag, pull out that book you've been meaning to finish and fast realise that you did finish it. Weeks ago.

Luckily for you, the Gul Bude Book Swap is now open for business!

Bring in any book that's worth leaving on our shelf, and feel free to walk back out the door with another one.

And we won't even call the cops, because it's all for free.

Meet Tom

We've got a new recruit to the Bude Chapter. His name is Tom, and he is the new Assistant Manager. He knows a lot about food, makes a good cup of joe, and in his spare time he shapes very odd looking surfboards.

He also wears skinny jeans and carries it off.
Sadly though, Action Man found it necessary to steal Toms thunder in this picture.

Consider the humble bar of wax

Wax. It has a hard life.

Plucked from a surf shop shelf and furiously rubbed onto the deck of a board. Stood on by some mucky-footed young teenager less well-travelled than itself. Scraped off and discarded when a new season comes around (or worse, covered over in favour of some upstart pretender to the title, some 'new brand', the swine...)

I'm as guilty as I'd guess a lot of my peers are of not really looking at wax much beyond the traction it's going to give me at a certain time of year. But sometimes it's good to take something and stare deeper, which is what I just did...

Here at Gul we stock Matunas Organic surf wax. I've used this wax and can happily report that traction was A+, smell was 5 star, and the wax marks I left on my friends car seat were easily removable (board bags available from Gul here!) And after a little read up, it's good to know that what they claim on the wrapper is elaborated upon the website. Made using local ingredients? For me, it therefore joins the realms of all good chutneys and scrumpys.

So I highly recommend it.

Thursday 25 March 2010

The weekend is on it's merry way..

I'm sorry to say it but the surf "ain't looking all that" over the week-end.
But don't let that stop you visiting Sunny Bude and popping into the Gul store, (your going to need something to do eh!?)

The new Recore eco suits are in so come and try 3mm of warm good karma on and get ready early for your spring/summer sessions.

Plus loads of top fashion and hardware...... It's all here!

Downtime Fillers

We've got a bumper bunch of highly recommended surf books and flicks here in the shop. We know they're good because we've done personal "research" on most of them.
So if you want a gift idea for someone of a saltwater-sliding-persuasion, we could probably go some way to fixing you up.

The RECORES have landed!

The Gul RECORE wetsuits have arrived in Bude. Combining super high-performance with very limited environmental impact, well, what's not to like? And all at a very reasonable price too.
There's more information right here

Feel free to come and try one on.

Surf's been up.

Precipitating the rush

Boo.... it's raining again. The ever-popular Stratus Jackets are back in the window and our dear little hula girl is playing to a very thin audience today.

But she keeps playing.

Monday 22 March 2010

Hark! Is that the sweet sound of clean swell I hear?

Tomorrow morning is looking particularly favourable for waves, wind and weather.

Welllllll..... perhaps not the weather, but 2 out of 3 are odds I like. Why not tie in a smurf with a jaunt into town for a look at our new Gul store. Lots of lovely hardware, a good line in fashion, books to swap, mags to peruse... it's a Tuesday dream.

Sunday Bathtime

Sunday morning in Bude and the Spring sunshine is high and warm. We took the rain jackets off the mannequins (no need for them today we hope - but the chickens remain to be counted) and now have a few personal favourites up in the window.
Here's one of our little likes for the day - it's been doing the rounds on facebook for a year or so, but it never fails to please however many times we watch it. It's also got a very Sunday sounding soundtrack, courtesy of Megan Washington.
Have a great day, do drop by.

This is Bude

So as we find our shop-floor-feet up here close to the Cornwall/Devon border (with the much-appreciated help of our colleagues in various Gul stores to the South) we'll throw a couple of images up that best translates how lovely it is up this way. These shots were taken over the last week. It's actually wet today but that's good for the thirsty seedlings.

Tuesday 16 March 2010

We're (tentatively) here!!

The doors are open.
The stock is shiny.
The kettle is on.
The Staff are PUMPED.

Gul Bude is now open for business.
